Solomon Weldegirma

Professor of Instruction

Dr. Solomon Weldegirma is a Senior Instructor in the Chemistry Department at the University of South Florida where he also serves as the Organic Chemistry Lab Coordinator. Dr. Weldegirma joined the Chemistry Department as faculty in 2006 and has been involved in the coordination of the organic chemistry laboratory program in addition to teaching organic chemistry courses and mentoring graduate teaching assistants. Dr. Weldegirma earned a B.S. in chemistry with honors from Asmara University in Eritrea. He received an M.S. in organic chemistry from Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia, and a Ph.D. in synthetic organic chemistry from the University of Oslo, Norway. He went on to complete a postdoctoral research fellowship at USF where he examined the synthesis of biologically relevant natural products. In 2018, Dr. Weldegirma was awarded a Fulbright Core Scholarship Award to introduce and teach green chemistry throughout Ethiopia. He will be hosted by Bahir Dar University in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, and he will be working to promote and integrate green chemistry curriculum into Ethiopian institutions.
