Manisha Joshi
Associate Professor
Dr. Manisha Joshi, Associate Professor of Social Work in the College of Behavioral and Community Sciences at USF, received her Ph.D. in Social Welfare from the University of Pennsylvania, and a M.S. in Public Health (Maternal and Child Health) from Harvard University. The primary aim of her research is to advance knowledge about the health of women and children in the U.S. and in international resource-poor settings (e.g., India, Haiti, Kyrgyzstan). Her focus is on violence against women, which encompasses multiple forms of violence, including violence by an intimate partner, and sexual violence including rape, perpetrated by non-partners. Apart from death, violence experienced by a woman can lead to multiple adverse health outcomes (e.g., injuries, STIs/HIV, unwanted pregnancy, low birth weight babies, preterm births, chronic pain, depression, anxiety, PTSD), and negative social and economic consequences for her, her children, family and community. Dr. Joshi's research program has two goals: (a) to contribute to knowledge about health effects of violence on women and their children; and, (b) to use that knowledge to develop and/or adapt evidence-based interventions to address such violence and their health effects. Dr. Joshi works with both qualitative and quantitative data and has published her work in several peer-reviewed journals including the American Journal of Public Health, the Psychology of Women Quarterly, Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved, Journal of Affective Disorders and others. Currently, she serves as an appointed member of the Council on Global Learning and Practice, a unit of the Council for Social Work Education (national association representing social work education in the United States), which is responsible for developing the national agenda for understanding and stimulating the international parameters of social work education.
