Patrice Buzzanell

Distinguished University Professor

Patrice M. Buzzanell (Ph.D., Purdue) is a Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of South Florida. In 2021, she received both the Steven H. Chaffee Career Achievement Award from the International Communication Association (ICA) and the Samuel L. Beker Distinguished Service Award from the National Communication Association (NCA). ICA Fellow and Past President, she also has served as President of the Council of Communication Associations and the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language, and Gender. She became a NCA Distinguished Scholar in 2017 and was awarded NCA's Charles H. Woolbert Research Award for an article that has withstood the test of time and the NCA Organizational Communication Division Mentoring Award in 2024. Her research focuses on the discourse, materialities, and practices regarding career, work-life policy, resilience, gender, and engineering design in micro-macro contexts. She has published: 6 edited books; over 360 journal articles, chapters, and engineering education proceedings. She has edited Management Communication Quarterly (MCQ) and forums or special issues for several communication and interdisciplinary journals. She has served on 33 editorial boards (24 current) and on the Oxford Research Encyclopedia and other advisory boards. Her NSF grants focus on engineering ethics scales and processes as well as design thinking for the professional formation of engineers. Among her other awards and honors, she was an Endowed Visiting Professor for the School of Media and Design at Shanghai Jiaotong University and a Velux Professor at Copenhagen Business School. She was inducted into the 2020 CSCA Hall of Fame (Central States Communication Association) and received the Provost Outstanding Mentor Award at Purdue, where she was a Distinguished University Professor and Endowed Chair and Director of the Susan Bulkeley Butler Center for Leadership Excellence.
