Lucy Guerra
Professor
Lucy Guerra, MD, MPH, is professor and Division Director, Internal Medicine; and Associate Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program in the USF Morsani College of Medicine. Originally from Cuba, Dr. Guerra and her family eventually settled in the United States, initially in Kansas, then Miami, Florida. She earned her bachelor's degree cum laude from Amherst College. She went on to earn her Master's in Public Health (public health and epidemiology), summa cum laude, from Florida International University and the University of Miami (joint program); and her MD from Mount Sinai School of Medicine (NY). She interned at New York Columbia Presbyterian Hospital of the Weil Cornell College of Medicine and completed her residency at University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics. During her graduate work, she was first introduced to caring for marginalized and homeless patients when she volunteered at the University of Miami's Camillus Healthcare for the Homeless. Upon joining the USF faculty full-time in 2006, she helped to start the USF Bridge Clinic which is 100% volunteer, serving the needs of underserved patients in the university community. Later, she helped to found Tampa Bay Street Medicine which is also 100% volunteer and serves the needs of the homeless, transient and refugee populations. In her own words, " it is a privilege to work with students, residents and faculty who see service in the healthcare needs of others as a cornerstone of the practice of medicine." Dr. Guerra's awards include: Tampa Bay Times "Best Doctor" finalist; Excellence in Patient Centered Community Service (USF); American College of Physicians Florida Chapter Volunteerism and Community Service Award; Molina Healthcare Heroes Award for Excellence in Clinical Care for Patients on Medicaid; Roy A. Behnke Award for Outstanding Teaching (USF Morsani College of Medicine); and Tampa Bay Hero Award Finalist for Humanism in Medicine (Tampa Bay Times), among many others.
