Joanne Valeriano-Marcet

Dr. Joanne Valeriano-Marcet, Professor of Medicine at the University of South Florida, Morsani College of Medicine, has served in multiple capacities as clinician, educator, and leader in both graduate (GME) and undergraduate medical education (UME). Dr. Valeriano-Marcet served as chief of the Division of Rheumatology at the James A. Haley VA (2007-2014). She continues to practice Rheumatology, mentor, and provide inspiration to students, residents, and fellows in the clinical setting. In 2007, Dr. Valeriano was appointed the Rheumatology Program Director and has used the experience to continue to enhance her expertise in GME. At a national level, Dr. Valeriano was appointed member of the Next Accreditation System (NAS) Working Group of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) to develop the Rheumatology Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs), curricular milestones, and revision of the ACR Rheumatology Core Curriculum Outline published in June 2015. From 2018 to 2019 she worked as a member of the ACGME Milestone 2 Rheumatology Committee Development Committee. She recently completed her service as chair of the Curricular Subcommittee of the ACR Committee on Training and Workforce(COTW) responsible for reviewing and approving submissions of mini curricula, revising the ACR Rheumatology Core Curriculum Outline, and ACR Educational Webpage. She currently serves on the American Board of Internal Medicine Rheumatology Board exam committee. Dr. Valeriano has been increasingly involved in undergraduate medical education including course development of Doctoring 1 and 2, Skin and Bones (an interdisciplinary dermatology, rheumatology, and orthopedic elective). Innovative teaching methods have included the development of "Arthur", a virtual tool to teach joint pattern recognition, and the development of a joint injection workshop, using simulators to teach joint injection techniques to learners at all levels. Her teaching career is marked by honors including; Presenter of the white coats to year 1 medical students, Interprofessionalism Award from the University of South Florida School of Physical Therapy, Outstanding Teacher Award from the University of South Florida, College of Medicine, Outstanding Program Director Award, and the Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award.
