Douglas E. Hughes
Professor
Dr. Douglas E. Hughes is Professor of Marketing and Director of the School of Marketing & Innovation at the University of South Florida's Muma College of Business. He previously served as a professor and department chair at Michigan State University, where he was a faculty member for 11 years. He earned a Ph.D. at the University of Houston, M.B.A. at Michigan State University, and B.S. (Marketing) at the University of Tennessee. Hughes leverages over two decades of corporate experience, having worked as CEO of a business services firm and as a senior executive in both marketing and sales at Fortune 100 and Fortune 500 consumer products companies. He also has consulted for a variety of firms across multiple industries. Hughes is past Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Personal Selling & Sales Management, the Sales field's leading academic journal, and also served on the Editorial Review Board for the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, one of the Marketing field's top academic journals. He has published articles in Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of Retailing, International Journal of Research in Marketing, Journal of Service Research, Marketing Letters, Journal of Personal Selling & Sales Management, and Industrial Marketing Management. His research focuses on how firms may maximize performance through sales organization effectiveness and through the accompanying management of external and internal relationships. Hughes' articles have received several awards, including the 2025 AMA Sales SIG Eli Jones Long Term Impact Award, the 2016 and 2011 American Marketing Association Sales Excellence in Research Award, the 2021 and 2016 James M. Comer Award for the Best Contribution to Selling and Sales Management Theory, an honorable mention for the 2021 Marvin Jolson Award for the Best Contribution to Selling and Sales Management Practice, and the 2016 Emerald Citation of Excellence Award. Dr. Hughes also is the recipient of several teaching honors, including the 2020 Teaching Award for Excellency at the Vienna University of Economics & Business, the 2010 AMA McGraw-Hill/Irwin Sales Teacher of the Year Award, and the 2006-2007 Sales Excellence Institute's Teacher of the Year award. Hughes was honored in 2013 as a Withrow Emerging Scholar and was featured on the cover of Top Sales Magazine in 2015 along with an article about his research on salesperson motivation.
