Assistant Professor

Michelle L. Canale, DNP, CRNA, APRN is the Director of the Nurse Anesthesia Program at the University of South Florida and has been involved with nurse anesthesia didactic and clinical education since 2006. She has been a nurse for 25 years and a CRNA engaged in the clinical practice of anesthesia for the past 19 years. Her experience includes administration of the nurse anesthesia training program, curriculum development, course instruction, advising, mentoring, precepting nurse anesthesia students in clinical training, and evaluating Master and Doctoral level nurse anesthesia students. Her interests are focused on the practice of anesthesia, professional advocacy, education, and communication techniques to promote healthcare quality and patient safety. She has published and presented nationally on topics related to communication and patient safety, emotional intelligence in graduate admissions, emotional intelligence and simulation in nursing education, and effective evaluation and documentation of students in a litigious society. Dr. Canale has served in the College of Nursing as a continuous member of the Graduate Curriculum Committee from 2014 to present (Chair 2016-2019), Student Affairs and Progression Committee (2016-2017), Admissions and Progressions Committee (2021-present), and serves as the Chair of the USF Council on Educational Policies and Issues (2020-present). Dr. Canale has deep-rooted professional service to the Florida Association of Nurse Anesthesiology, including Government Relations Committee (2017-2019), Director (2018-2020, Vice President (2020-2021), Program Planning Chair (2018-present), and President-elect 2021-present), and has also served two terms on the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology Education Committee (2017-2019).
