Associate Professor

Dr. Ismail Uysal received his B.S. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Orta Dogu Teknik Universitesi in Ankara, Turkey in 1998, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA in 2006 and 2008. He's been with the University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa, FL since 2012, where he is currently an Associate Professor and the Undergraduate Director of Electrical Engineering. Dr. Uysal conducts impactful and interdisciplinary research on machine (deep) learning theory, data analytics & their IoT applications using radio-frequency-identification (RFID) & wireless sensor technologies. Since joining USF in Tampa, he published more than 60 peer-reviewed articles on deep machine learning theory and applications in semi-supervised and unsupervised settings, data-oriented applications of RFID systems specifically in healthcare and agricultural systems, and signal processing algorithms for brain-computer interfaces. He's been the PI/Co-PI on research awards with a combined budget of $5.2 million over the past decade sponsored by the U.S. National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Walmart Foundation, Florida Department of Transportation, Florida High Tech Corridor, and major industry including pharmaceutical and IoT technology companies. He won the SCEEE Young Investigator Award in 2017, represented USF's College of Engineering at the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committees 2015 IoT Showcase in Washington, D.C. and his work on RFID and sensor technologies was featured in IEEE Spectrum's June 2013 issue "Tracking Food for Safety's Sake". As a Senior Member of IEEE and the National Academy of Inventors, he is dedicated to transformative research, exemplified by his four issued and one pending U.S. patents since 2021.
