Kelley Baumgartel

Assistant Professor

Kelley Baumgartel, PhD, RN is an Assistant Professor in the College of Nursing. Her program of research includes examination of molecular mechanisms for human milk composition variability, and whether these differences are clinically relevant. It is notoriously difficult to procure human milk samples for research purposes. Human milk samples are needed for academic and corporate uses, whether in the field of lactation or otherwise. Dr. Baumgartel recognized the need for a world-class nonprofit biological bank that could provide human milk samples, each paired with hundreds of points of data, standard or customized. She conceptualized and designed such a biobank, convening the expertise of a diverse group of scholars in bioethics, immunology, nursing, microbiology, medicine, law, and business. Dr. Baumgartel has been selected to be a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing for the impact made by this nurse-developed biobank. Dr. Baumgartel is an associate member of the International Society for Research in Human Milk and Lactation, has served as an invited guest for the American Academy of Nursing Expert Panel on Breastfeeding, and is the Chair of the PhD recruitment subcommittee here at USF College of Nursing.
