Wenqi (Vince) Liu

Assistant Professor

Dr. Wenqi "Vince" Liu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry, with an affiliation in the Department of Chemical, Biological, and Materials Engineering at the University of South Florida. He earned his B.S. in Chemistry from Shandong University in 2013, then pursued his Ph.D. at the University of Notre Dame under the guidance of Prof. Bradley Smith. His doctoral research focused on molecular recognition in water and the development of Synthavidin technology, culminating in his Ph.D. in 2018 and the prestigious Dow Chemical Company Outstanding Graduate Student Award. Following his Ph.D., Dr. Liu conducted postdoctoral research with Nobel Laureate Prof. Fraser Stoddart at Northwestern University from 2018 to 2021. His work focused on investigating pyridinium-based cyclophanes and developing supramolecular gold recovery technology. In August 2021, Dr. Liu joined the University of South Florida as an Assistant Professor. His research spans supramolecular chemistry, organic synthesis, physical chemistry, polymer chemistry, and advanced materials. A key focus of his work is molecular recognition, where he investigates the novel physical, chemical, optical, and mechanical properties arising from noncovalent interactions. Dr. Liu's research addresses critical societal challenges in energy, health, and environmental sciences, and his current project on understanding hydrogen bonding in water has been honored with the NSF Early Career Award.
