Daniel Yeh
Professor
Daniel Yeh, Ph.D., PE, BCEE, LEED AP is a Professor of Environmental Engineering at the University of South Florida, where he has been a faculty member since 2005. He leads the Membrane Biotechnology Laboratory at USF, which focused on the research and development of innovative wastewater treatment and resource recovery technologies. Since 2020, he has also been a Visiting Professor at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in the area of regenerative water purification for space. Dr. Yeh is a LEED green building accredited professional, a registered professional engineer, and a board-certified environmental engineer. Dr. Yeh has degrees from the Georgia Institute of Technology (Ph.D. in environmental engineering) and the University of Michigan (MSE environmental engineering, BSE civil engineering, BS natural resources). He also has postdoctoral research experience at Stanford University. One of his most impactful inventions is the NEWgenerator a portable and self-contained solar-powered toilet system that converts the collected waste into renewable energy, fertilizer nutrients, and clean water that can be used for irrigation of crops. The NEWgenerator was selected for a 2011 Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Grand Challenges Explorations grant and has been deployed and commercialized in India and South Africa. In 2014, his team received the Cade Museum Prize for their invention of the NEWgenerator. The NEWgenerator has been featured in The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and mentioned in MIT Technology Review. The same invention received the 2020 Patents for Humanity Award from the USPTO. Dr. Yeh received the USF Excellence in Innovation Award from USF in 2014 and 2019. His team was also nominated for the USF World Global Achievement Award in 2019. To date, Dr. Yeh has received over $11.5M in funding as PI or collaborator, published over 47 peer-reviewed journal papers, and been issued seven US patents. He is an inaugural member of the NAI USF Chapter.
