Dr. Kathryn Arthur is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences. Her African research contributes significantly to method and theory regarding gender, technology, and Indigenous knowledge. Over 30 years, she has directed large international projects in Ethiopia with funding she garnered from the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, Leakey Foundation, and Fulbright. She has written over 30 academic articles and book chapters. Her publications in esteemed journals such as Science, Nature, and PNAS focus on her collaborative community research in southern Ethiopia, which led to the recovery of a 4500-year-old man who provided the first ancient complete human genome from Africa. This discovery led to over 250 international press releases and her invitation to become a Fellow of the prestigious Explorers Club and a nominated member of Sigma Xi. She challenged the Man-the-Toolmaker Western trope through her ethnoarchaeological research published in American Anthropologist, a documentary film Woman the Toolmaker, and edited book, Gender and Hide Production. Consequently, two prestigious National awards from the American Anthropological Association, the Gordon R. Willey Prize and the Exemplary Cross-Fields Scholarship, honored Kathryn's research methodology and writing. Her most recent book, The Lives of Stone Tools, was awarded the World Archaeological Congress Joan Gero Book Award. The book interrogates our persistent cloaking of Indigenous knowledge under Western science to control how gender, skill, and materials are defined and projected onto the past. She promotes that entre to Indigenous knowledge requires a researcher to be committed to becoming articulate in local meanings, experiences, practices, and histories through long-term apprenticeship with community experts. She also founded a new academic journal in her field, Ethnoarchaeology, and is currently co-editor of Archaeologies.
