Vladimir Uversky

Professor

Vladimir N. Uversky, Ph.D., Sc.D., Professor, obtained his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Physics from Leningrad State University in Russia in 1986. He completed his Ph.D. in Biophysics at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (1991), and Sc.D. in Biophysics at the Institute of Experimental and Theoretical Biophysics, Russian Academy of Sciences (1998). He spent his early career working on the experimental analysis of protein folding and misfolding at the Institute of Protein Research, and later at the Institute for Biological Instrumentation. Here, he found that some unstructured proteins can be biologically active. These findings forced him to reconsider the generality of the protein structure-function paradigm and to suggest that intrinsically disordered proteins (functional proteins without rigid 3-dimensional structures) represent a new important realm of the protein kingdom. In 1998, he moved to the University of California Santa Cruz, and in 2004, he was invited to join the Indiana University School of Medicine as a Senior Research Professor. Dr. Uversky joined the University of South Florida in 2010. He is studying protein structure, stability, dynamics, function, folding, and misfolding, and has a special focus on intrinsically disordered proteins. He is also looking for the correlations between the peculiarities of intrinsically disordered proteins/regions and pathogenesis of human diseases, and studies roles of intrinsic disorder in liquid-liquid phase separation and biogenesis of membrane-less organelles. He has authored over 1350 scientific publications and edited multiple books and book series on protein structure, function, folding and misfolding. He was included in the Clarivate list of Highly Cited Researchers every year from 2014 to 2020. In 2021, he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (RSB) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). In 2023, he was elected as a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (FAIMBE).
