Khary Rigg
Associate Professor
Khary Rigg is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mental Health Law & Policy. Dr. Rigg also holds appointments within the Department of Sociology, Center for Justice Research & Policy, Florida Mental Health Institute, and Department of Criminology. He received his Ph.D. from University of Miami and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in health services research from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He joined the faculty at USF in 2013, but has been doing research on substance use disorders for over 15 years. He has worked on 10 National Institute on Drug Abuse funded projects and published over 70 peer-reviewed articles in journals such as Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment, International Journal of Drug Policy, and Drug & Alcohol Dependence. His research focuses on improving interventions for preventing and treating substance use disorders, as well as reducing harm for persons who are actively using drugs. His work has helped guide law enforcement, clinicians, regulatory agencies, and industry to develop policy initiatives and recommendations for best practices. His most recent research has been cited in court cases, congressional hearings, industry documents, as well as covered in the media. Dr. Rigg has also published several policy briefs and commentaries that have sparked national dialogue on issues such as the opioid-crime connection and rural-urban differences in the opioid epidemic. He is currently the Addiction Editor for Annals of Medicine and sits on the editorial boards of Psychology of Addictive, Qualitative Social Work, and Drug & Alcohol Dependence.
