David Murphy
Associate Professor
Dr. Murphy is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of South Florida. He joined the department in 2016 after completing a postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins University. He completed a double B.S. in mechanical and biomedical engineering from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2004, an M.Phil. in biological science from Cambridge University in 2005, and an M.S. in mechanical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2008. He earned his Ph.D. in civil and environmental engineering from Georgia Tech in 2012. He received the NSF CAREER award in 2019 for his work on the fluid dynamics of biological propulsion in tiny insects and zooplankton and the NAS Gulf Research Program Early-Career Research Fellowship in 2017 for his work on oil spills. His research has been featured in national publications like the New York Times as well as in the 2016 documentary, Dispatches from the Gulf, narrated by Matt Damon.
